Coated and uncoated stocks each offer unique finishes and uses. Coated stocks (silk and gloss) have a smooth surface that enhances print quality, making colours appear sharper and more vibrant, while uncoated stocks have a more natural, textured feel that gives a softer, more understated look. Paper and card weights are measured in GSM (grams per square metre), with 80gsm being a lightweight stock commonly used for everyday printing, and 350gsm being a much heavier, thicker card ideal for covers, business cards, and packaging. The higher the GSM, the sturdier and more durable the stock.

Uncoated paper and card have a porous, textured surface that readily absorbs ink from pens and pencils, making writing smooth and smudge-free. Coated stocks, on the other hand, have a smooth, sealed surface designed to enhance print quality; this can make them harder to write on because ink may sit on top of the coating and smudge, or certain pens may not mark well at all.
